Diets for Longevity

Growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, very few people were obese, but the processed food industry gradually changed that. Progress meant more and more precooked foods, boxed cereals, fast food restaurants, and by the 1980s, microwavable dinners. As dietary habits changed in favor of convenience, obesity soared.

Diets were originally designed for weight loss, but evolved into research into the best diet for health and longevity. Now, just about every health publication or website, will discuss a particular diet as being ideal.

I read a lot of books, magazines and more recently internet sites about nutrition. Vegan, vegetarian, plant based, ketogenic, paleo, South Beach, raw foods, carnivore, Mediterranean diet, are some of the ‘diet fads’ that have been popularized. Many made sense when I read them, based on the research available at the time. I tried different nutrition plans, all promising greater energy and freedom from disease. The trouble was, they didn’t all agree on what was best.

It became obvious that no one diet is good for everyone. People at different stages of life may have different dietary needs. We are fortunate to live in a time when so much information on human nutrition is available. However, that also makes it difficult to figure out what is most beneficial for us.

Dave Asprey has been called ‘The Father of Biohacking: The Science of Longevity and Human Optimization’. Gaia TV has a series of video episodes where he presents cutting edge information on nutrition and lifestyle optimization. You can watch the series with a 7-day free trial of Gaia TV. I think you’ll find it well worth your time.

Should you take supplements?

The supplement market is huge, and unfortunately it’s not that well regulated. It’s hard for consumers to know whether the products they are buying actually work and do no harm. It’s important to buy from companies that stand behind their products. Ideally a company researches a product thoroughly, does quality control, and doesn’t charge more than the product is worth.

A Premier Supplement Company

One company that I have personally used for years, is Life Extension. They have been pioneers in supplement research, with a team of scientists testing and formulating products.

The company has a free wellness specialists hotline, available 7 days a week. You can ask questions about products, formulations, and get a personalized program that includes supplements, diet and exercise.

The Life Extension Foundation publishes a monthly magazine, containing informative articles by experts. These professional articles are written in language a lay person can understand. I’ve been a subscriber for years and they have played a big role in my nutrition education.
