Dealing with Pain: Red Light Therapy

Pain is one of the most frequent problems as our bodies age. There are many ways to deal with it…over the counter analgesics, prescription medications, massage, heat or topical creams and lotions. Red light therapy for pain relief has gained popularity in the last few years. I’ve invested in several red light devices, including a red light panel, a body wrap and a red light laser device. All of them can be helpful in dealing with localized pain issues.

Amazon has a lot of red light therapy products available, made for various purposes. Here are the 3 products I own and use. Please note I am simply sharing my own experience, and not giving medical advice. Consult your health professional about using these for any condition you have.

The cordless wrap is rechargeable, so you can strap it on and go about your business. I find it helpful for lower back pain or shoulder pain. I’ve also wrapped it around my legs while sitting in my recliner, and it can be used while charging.

The Hooga device is heavy duty and several units can be joined together if you need more surface exposed. It has both a red light and infrared settings, which can be used separately or together. When both are on you get the benefit of heat as well as red light. I love using it on my feet and legs.

The cold laser is not specifically recommended for humans, as it isn’t FDA licensed or approved. If you have a pet in pain, people say it’s very helpful for injuries or arthritis.
