Top Posture Training Devices for Chronic Back Pain Relief

Comparison of several lumbar support posture correction devices.

Many older people develop kyphosis (hunch back) or scoliosis (side to side curve in the spine) as a result of poor posture. This can cause other conditions like chronic headaches, sciatica or backaches.

My poor posture started in my teens, and no amount of ‘stand up straight’ commands from my parents seemed to help. I spent too many hours sitting, either hunched over a book, a desk, or the piano. I developed a forward head posture, which seemed impossible to overcome.

I’ve tried various braces over the years, but found them uncomfortable to wear. To counteract the various aches in my shoulders, neck and back, I tried countless pillows and lumbar supports. It got to the point where the only way to be really comfortable was to sit in a recliner, with my legs up and my head, neck and lumbar region adequately supported. Sitting straight in a chair for more than a few minutes, caused intense pain.

Recently, while searching for yet another lumbar pillow, I came across a posture training device. It’s has been a game changer for me, as it encourages the proper curve in the lumbar spine.

It also enables me to sit comfortably on a bench or even the floor with no back support…something I could not do for years.Unfortunately, this device doesn’t fit everyone. My partner also has back issues and it was too small for him. I started searching for similar products, advertised on Amazon. The Curble device was rated as most popular, came in several sizes, and has research backing its use. I bought the largest size for him…the Curble Grand.

Unfortunately, that model doesn’t have enough outward curve at the top to be comfortable. I ordered the next size down..the Curble Wide. He’s liking that one more, even though it’s smaller. Here are 2 photos of the 3 devices together. Take a look at the difference in angle and height of the lumbar portion. Also notice where the area of greatest curvature is in each model.

It’s not easy to tell from pictures what will work for you. Fortunately, Amazon has a great return policy, and the Curble Grand I ordered will be returned shortly. If you’d like more information on these devices as well as other possibilities I haven’t discussed, check the links below.
